Chapter 21

Amethyst

“I’m not eating it,” I said, crossing my arms, battling once again with warring emotions. I was hungry for blood, food, and dick, and I was rather disappointed in which one Eito chose to offer if my treacherous whore heart was going to be honest.

“Come on. Just one,” he coaxed, his lip curled into a smile that made me want to take a bite out of him instead.

I shook my head, my long, snow-dusted hair whipping against my cheeks. “No.”

“I know you want to.”

“No, I do not,” I said, my voice strained. So yes, I was hungry. And goodness knew some cheese and apple cider wasn’t what the monster inside of me craved.

But even I, beast I may be, had limits.

Eito frowned, his perfect lips now turned down at the corner. “Hmm… I wonder what’s wrong. Lunas in heat usually love baby mammals.”

He cradled the cub in his arms, rocking it back and forth like a father doting over an infant. That disturbing display sickened me even more.

“I’m not going to eat a baby bear. And.… And what if it’s a shifter cub? You’ll have your hands full,” I warned, well aware that he wouldn’t give a shit if an army of shifters showed up on his doorstep—he’d probably just try to eat them, too.

“It’s just a plain, no magic Terrin baby. But if it were a shifter, I’d enjoy the hunt,” he confirmed, shaking the cub around by the scruff of its neck. “Do you think mommy or daddy would taste as good as you?” he asked it in a babyish coo, as he gazed into its large dark eyes.

Fuck. I was softer than I thought. He made me pity the poor thing even more.

“You better put him down or—”

A piercing roar echoed behind us, shaking the snow from the branches of the soaring quaking aspens above.

“Guess who’s back, baby bear,” Eito sang, nonplussed.

I bit back laughter and yanked on his long ponytail. “Drop the baby, Eito, let’s go!”

He roughly released the cub, plopping it a few inches deep into the snow, just as the grizzly bear barreled towards us. I grabbed Eito’s hand, and with our ringing laughs reverberating alongside the bear’s outrage, we ran for it.

The bear was pissed and chased Eito explicitly for an entire mile before finally giving up and going back to its babies.

I bent over laughing while Eito kept his eye on his retreating foe. My stomach aching from more laughter than I could remember ever having, I sank against a tree.

He jogged over to me, bent over, hands on his knees, and grinned.

“That was fun,” he said.

I scooped up a handful of snow and hurled it at his handsome, infuriatingly calm face.

“You almost got torn apart by that bear,” I scowled, trying and failing to curb my laughter. “So maybe fun for me, but not for you. Don’t you know not to upset a mama like that?”

He sat down beside me, his body brushing against mine as we shared the tree trunk.
